Revamp of the system…and Cubicle Nation in Revolt

Michael is a bit under the weather today. Originally, it was to be his day to post his Black Belt write up. However, since he is listed as “day-to-day” at the moment, and I have yet to complete my write up, I will post something brief today.

- Jason

As many of you have read lately, Michael has been overhauling his system. After rereading some of his posts on the process (especially the goal setting part), I determined that I need to get a fresh start myself.

My process will be different from Michael’s, and therefore the resulting system will also be. I have a tendency to be a little more byte-based than paper-based in my approach to life. So I know my system will depend less on paper and more on gadgets. I will be writing on my system overhaul in the next few weeks as it develops.

As always, I am open to recommendations on approach or tools. That’s what the comments section is for.

Michael stumbled on this write up from Pam Slim’s Escape From Cubicle Nation blog yesterday, and shared it with me (especially since I work in cubicle nation). He must have been feeling my pain yesterday…j/k.

I thought it was good reading, and was worthy of a trackback.

Escape From (Alcatraz errrrr…) Cubicle Nation - Open Letter to CXOs Across the Corporate World

Enjoy.

  • Hi Jason,

Feel free to try out Fingertips, which I wrote for easy access to any document, program and Outlook on my computer. You can download the beta for free from http://www.getfingertips.com

For instance, creating a next action in Outlook from _anywhere_ on my computer amounts to:

    1. Press Ctrl+` (= Fingertips shortcut)
    2. Type in: “na this is what i want to do;”
    3. Press enter

    Voila, that’s it.

“na” is my command for Next Action, but you can define, adapt and create your own commands. I also have commands for Someday/Maybe, Waiting For, Projects etc.

The semi-colon at the end tells Fingertips to save and close the newly generated Task immediately. Otherwise, the task would be shown to me in Outlook, where I can adapt, save and close it myself.

I also have commands for all my other programs: “nc” is Norton Commander :)

And Fingertips currently scans my IE favorites. Any favorite that has a name of max 10 characters, becomes a command automatically. So “dafo” takes me to David Allen’s Forums, because I saved that location in Internet Explorer as a favorite “dafo”.

Anyone can download the beta from http://www.getfingertips.com

And please let me know if you like it, or if you have any suggestions!

    Kind regards,
    Taco Oosterkamp
