Develop Each Team Member as a Person
Lead-Down Principle #3 in John C. Maxwell’s book The 360° Leader is to develop each team member as a person. Notice that we did not say, “equip each team member”, we said, “develop”. The two terms are very different. Development entails helping someone to become a better person, not just giving them the tools to do a job. Help employees become better workers and leaders.
How should we go about doing this?
1) See development as a long-term process
2) Discover each person’s dreams and desires
3) Lead everyone differently
4) Use organizational goals for individual development
5) Help them know themselves
6) Be ready to have a hard conversation
7) Celebrate the right wins
Prepare them for leadership

Hey guys,
Here’s another spin on this…just look at the first word of each “suggestion:”
1) See
2) Discover
3) Lead
4) Use
5) Help
6) Be
7) Celebrate
Imagine if an organization (whether an office environment or a family!) were focused on these seven “habits!” Any one of those could be a great place to start. The mentoring process – getting someone on The Team – from where they are, to where they want to be is easier when there is agreement on what those words mean and how to apply them on a regular basis.
