The Mind Mapping Software Blog

For those of you that are into mind mapping (like myself), Chuck Frey has a blog that is geared toward discussion of mind mapping software.

His latest entry is a good writeup on Eric Mack’s webinar on using MindManger as a knowledge management tool.

Jott…Thoughts to Actions

I commute to work every day. Now I am fortunate to not live in a place like Los Angeles where my 30 mile commute could take hours. But I do spend roughly 60 - 75 minutes in my car each day just getting to work and back.

My dilemma…what if something pops into my head while driving 75 mph with cars all around. No, I am not going to make an attempt at writing or typing something @ that speed. But I need to capture it before it seeps out of one of those cracks in my head…enter Jott.

Nozbe: Starting to Get Things Done via the Web?

Well, howdy to all of you Black Belt Productivity readers. This is the first in what is going to be a new feature here at BBP…the review of products that are geared toward people who practice GTD.

First up on the Cavalcade of Fun: the web app, Nozbe.

Nozbe: Start Getting Things Done via the Web

Nozbe touts itself as a ’simple and efficient web-based productivity system.’ At first glance, there is a lot of great things in Nozbe that I have not seen in other GTD web apps. But once you start looking further, you start to see noticeable limitation in the app that are really unacceptable.

Cranking Widgets Master Speaks

As part of BBP’s acceptance to be interviewed (Michael’s and Jason’s) by Cranking Widgets, we required Mr. Widget, himself, to turn the tables and submit his answers to us. His blog is an excellent source for GTD and especially, del.icio.us stuff, which is how I came across it. His post inspired me to once again take up del.icio.us for my bookmarking needs.

Brett has come to be a good friend to both Jason and I. We all share so much in common with one another, even outside the realm of GTD Bloggers. We are all fathers of two kids (Brett’s second is on the way), and all of the kids are one boy and one girl.

A New Day is Here

Following up on my previous post, A Brand New Day is on the Horizon, I wanted to let you, readers, in on some good news.

I am now the Proud Owner of a MacBook Pro!!

I ordered the machine today from Apple, Inc. I am so excited. I was going to wait for Leopard to come out, as well as the new Apple Store in Birmingham, Alabama. But after talking to BBP friend, Emory Williamson-Lundsberg and he said to GO GO GO!!! and buy that machine! Since there is no release date in sight for Leopard, nor any opening date for the Apple Store, I went ahead and pulled the trigger. I went with a refurbished model (since it was $500 cheaper than new). The specs are

A Brand New Day is on the Horizon

After reading Brett’s GREAT article this morning, seeing how Jay’s wife loves iCommit, and in talking with my illustrious cohort, Jason, I think that there is going to be some serious systems rethinking in my future.

Like Brett, I just found Stikkit and signed up for it, as I do for almost every new web app. I agree with him that it is not ready for (GTD) prime time yet…but the magical Merlin may have something up his sleeve to push them in that direction. Though the writeup he did on 43Folders was very impressive. It looks to be a powerful app, and may very well be GTD worthy soon.

Contexts? You don’t need no stinkin’ contexts!

Lately, I have become torn with my selection of contexts. I am in IT so I have quite a number of computer related contexts and lately, I have found that it is easier to put everything on my mGTD that I keep with Moleskine Planner/Notebook. There are columns for next action, context, project, waiting for and S/M on the mGTD. I have found myself writing down NA for all of my tasks. Sometimes I will drop a context in the list, sometimes, when applicable, I will put the project down. I do us the waiting for column a lot.

BlackBerry Hacks

As our regular readers know, I recently purchased a BlackBerry Pearl and have been using it, in large part, as my GTD tool of choice.  Upon a recommendation, I picked up a copy of BlackBerry Hacks by Dave Mabe.  I have found several great nuggets in this book to enhance my BlackBerry experience.

Little known fact…

Our friend, Emory Lundberg, wrote several of the hacks posted in the book.  Way to go!!!

This book covers everything from using your BlackBerry as a fax machine, to displaying your signal strength in numbers rather than bars.

Confessions of a Procrastinator

Hi, my name is Jason…and I am a procrastinator. There…I said it.

David Allen has always said that it will take up to two years to get your GTD system up and running properly. I am approaching that two year mark. I have learned so much about how to set up a system and organize. However, I have apparently failed to absorb the message of Chapter 9 in Getting Things Done.

Keeping with the Tools Theme…The BlackBerry Adventure Continues

As I posted earlier, I am beginning to work with a BlackBerry Pearl as a smartphone device. My inital impressions were muted. I wanted something low profile, but functional. The non-QWERTY keyboard concerned me, but not anymore. BlackBerry has developed “Suretype” technology that is surprisingly reliable. So typing with this keyboard is almost as quick as a true QWERTY. I rarely have to correct “Suretype”.

From a GTD standpoint, this device is doing a very good thing for me. It is forcing be to return to the basics of workflow managment. The David has often said that for GTD, a PDA really only needs to be a good list manager. I am now finding that to be true.
